Most Lilacs are very good mothers. Their litter size generally ranges from 5 - 10 young and casualties in their litters are rare. They are not very picky mothers after the first 2 or 3 days and don't mind if you play with the babies. If you handle the babies often they become very friendly and playful.

Sometimes if the babies are born in the summer when it's hot you may notice the tips of their ears drooping down. This is called bell ears and is considered a fault at a show. This often happens to my growing baby rabbits when it's a hot day but it's just related to the heat and they soon outgrow it.
